PASTA AND PRADA
Autumn grew up in rural Montana where options were limited and ambition was not welcome. She made herself a promise: she would leave and she would matter. Not in the quiet, acceptable ways her town understood but on her own terms: independent, educated and childfree. She would save lives. She would see the world. She might even dismantle the patriarchy in her free time.
Fast forward years later, Dr. Autumn Ray is an ER physician who can intubate in chaos or deliver bad news but she is also burnt out and bored. Fresh off a breakup, she takes a job tediously working from home while trying to decide how to start over. Tired of being cooped up inside she heads to a bar one evening for a bite to eat. It is an unremarkable decision that changes everything. There she meets Stefano, a Italian paleontologist who looks more rockstar than professor. He is disarming and kind. He is also, as Autumn will learn, very, very wealthy.
Autumn is swept into a fairytale of sparkling jewelry, vacation homes, exclusive parties, and luxury shopping. Stefano introduces her to a life so far removed from her upbringing, her friend and family raise their eyebrows with suspicion and jealousy. It’s a real life Cinderella story, if Cinderella was middle aged with a mortgage and a deeply ingrained suspicion of anything that looked too much like dependence.
For all her years of schooling she has no idea how to navigate this new world. Learning Italian feels easy compared to learning the nuances of money and class. She isn’t sure she wants to learn. She worked hard to become the strong, independent woman she is to risk becoming someone’s cliché. Is it possible to have it all? Intimacy and independence? The life you built and the one you never dared imagine?
This is a story about class, and culture, and the strange dissonance of crossing between them. It is about love, in all its intoxicating and inconvenient forms. It is about reinvention, and the cost of it. It is about being watched, judged, admired, and misunderstood—often all at once.
This is the story of what happens after the fairy tale. it is for anyone who has ever tried to do the impossible: To become more without losing who they already are.
